In its assessment of nutrition status worldwide, the Lancet series on Maternal and Child Undernutrition listed Madagascar, where 48 percent of children under five are stunted, among the bottom ten countries for prevalence of malnutrition. To prevent malnutrition in Madagascar, we focus on supporting national efforts to improve the quality and reach of ongoing nutrition programs.

Highlights

  • In 2008, we used geographic information systems technology to help the USAID Mission map the coverage of nutrition programs, highlighting gaps and overlap. The same tool can help other countries assess gaps in coverage and assist service-delivery organizations in expanding their services.
  • The IYCN Project developed a maternal nutrition strategy that will be added to the National Nutrition Plan by the National Office of Nutrition. The strategy will be disseminated across the country as part of the Ministry of Health’s standards for maternal nutrition.
